Handicap betting is not exclusive to football. Almost every sport with a score or finishing order offers some form of spread or handicap market. The principles are the same: apply a virtual deficit or head start, then settle based on the adjusted result. What differs is the scoring system, the typical margin distribution, and the market mechanics.
Basketball uses the point spread model. The most common lines are half-point spreads to eliminate pushes.
Whole-number lines like –6.0 are used but push when the margin lands exactly on 6. Pushes in basketball are more common than in football because scoring is higher and margins repeat.
Quarter-point lines are rare in basketball. The standard is half-point. Some sportsbooks offer "alternate spreads" which allow you to move the line in exchange for adjusted odds.
NFL and college football are the original home of the point spread. Lines are expressed in points, typically with half-point increments.
Key numbers matter more in football than in any other sport. Because scoring happens in increments of 3 (field goals) and 7 (touchdowns with extra point), certain margins — 3, 7, 10, 14 — occur far more often than others.
This is why a line of –2.5 is not simply "a bit lower" than –3.5. Moving across the 3 or 7 is disproportionately valuable. Whole-number spreads on key numbers push frequently, which is why half-points around those numbers are aggressively priced.
Rugby uses a points handicap similar to football spreads. Margins are expressed in points, and both half-point and whole-number lines are used.

Rugby union has scoring increments of 5 (try) and 2 (conversion) plus 3 (penalty/drop goal), which creates clusters at 7, 10, 12, and multiples thereof. Rugby league has different scoring values (4 for try, 2 for goal, 1 for drop goal), which shifts the common margin distribution.
Draws are extremely rare in rugby league and uncommon in union, but they do occur. Handicap markets usually use half-points to avoid pushes. Whole-number handicap draws are possible when the adjusted margin lands exactly on the line.
Cricket handicap betting is less standardised than football or basketball. Different bookmakers use different formats.
Cricket handicap betting is complicated by weather interruptions, pitch conditions, and the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in limited-overs matches. Settlement rules vary by bookmaker, and abandoned matches may void bets depending on the market.
Tennis uses a game handicap rather than a set handicap in most markets. The favourite gives up a number of games, and the bet settles on total games won, not sets.

Set handicaps exist but are less common. Game handicaps are more granular and produce wider odds movement. In Grand Slam matches (best of five sets), game handicaps can be very large — 8.5 games or more — because the total game count is higher.
Retirements are a major factor in tennis betting. If a player retires mid-match, handicap bets are typically void regardless of the score at the time, but this varies by bookmaker.
Baseball uses the run line, which is almost always fixed at –1.5 / +1.5 runs.
Because baseball games are typically low-scoring and one-run games are common, the –1.5 run line on the favourite carries much higher odds than the moneyline. Underdogs on the +1.5 run line are popular because they offer a margin of protection.
Alternate run lines exist (–2.5, +2.5, etc.) but are less efficient and less liquid. The fixed –1.5 structure is the standard.
Ice hockey uses a puck line, almost always fixed at –1.5 / +1.5 goals.
Because hockey is low-scoring and one-goal games are frequent, the –1.5 puck line on the favourite offers inflated odds. Empty-net goals late in games are significant for puck line bets — they often push a one-goal lead to a two-goal lead in the final minute.
Alternative puck lines (–2.5, +2.5, –0.5, +0.5) are available but less efficient. Overtime and shootout goals count toward puck line settlement.
Golf handicap betting is less common but exists in two forms: matchup handicaps between two players, and tournament handicaps applied to the field.
Player A –1.5 vs Player B +1.5 in a tournament means Player A must finish at least 2 strokes better than Player B. The handicap can be in strokes or finishing position depending on the market.
Tournament handicap betting applies a stroke adjustment to the entire field, but this is an exotic market with limited liquidity. Matchup handicaps are more accessible but still niche compared to outright or top-10 markets.
eSports uses both map handicaps and round handicaps depending on the game.
Map handicaps work like set handicaps in tennis — the favourite must win by a certain margin of maps. Round or kill handicaps are more granular and similar to game handicaps.
eSports handicap markets are growing in liquidity but remain less efficient than traditional sports. Patch changes, roster moves, and map selection can move lines violently. Settlement rules vary by platform and event organiser.
