A single bet (also called a "single") is the simplest and most fundamental type of sports wager. You place money on one selection for one outcome of one event. If that outcome occurs, the bet wins; if not, it loses.
There are no combined odds or multiple legs. The bet stands or falls on that one result alone. This makes singles the easiest entry point for beginners and a preferred option for many experienced bettors who want lower risk and clearer decision-making.
Payout calculation (decimal odds, the most common international format):
Total return = Stake × Odds
Profit = Total return − Stake
Fractional odds example (common in the UK): Odds of 5/1 mean you win 5 units profit for every 1 unit staked, plus your stake returned.
Football – Match Winner (decimal odds)
Stake: £10 on Team A to win at odds of 2.50.
If Team A wins: Return = £10 × 2.50 = £25 (profit £15).
If Team A draws or loses: You lose the £10 stake.
Football – Player Prop
Stake: £20 on a player to be booked at odds of 5.00.
If the player is booked: Return = £100 (profit £80).
Otherwise: Stake is lost.
Horse Racing – Win Single
Stake: £10 on a horse at 2/1.
If the horse wins: Return = £30 (£20 profit + £10 stake).
If not: Stake lost.
Each-way single (common in racing): You effectively place two bets of equal stake—one to win and one to place (finish in the top positions according to the bookmaker's terms). The place portion pays at a fraction of the win odds (often 1/4 or 1/5). Total stake is therefore double a straight win single.
Singles are not limited to "who wins." Common markets include:
They work in football, horse racing, tennis, basketball, cricket, American football, and virtually any sport or event with fixed odds.
| Aspect | Single Bet | Accumulator (Acca) |
|---|---|---|
| Selections | 1 | 2 or more |
| Requirement to win | Only that one selection correct | All selections must be correct |
| Odds | The single price offered | Odds of each leg multiplied together |
| Risk level | Lower | Higher (one loss kills the whole bet) |
| Potential return | Modest | Can be much larger |
| Ease of tracking | Simple | More complex |
Singles give you independent results—you can win some and lose others. An accumulator is all-or-nothing.
A single bet is pure simplicity: one selection, one outcome, stake × odds if correct. It forms the foundation of almost all other bet types and remains one of the smartest ways to approach sports betting for clarity, control, and sustainable decision-making.
Always gamble responsibly. Only bet what you can afford to lose, and treat betting as entertainment rather than a guaranteed way to make money.
