Decimal odds express the total return per unit staked — including your original stake back. This is the most important thing to understand about the format, because it distinguishes it from fractional odds which express profit only.
A price of 2.50 means: for every £1 you stake, you receive £2.50 back in total. Your profit is £1.50; the other £1.00 is your returned stake. At odds of 1.00, you would receive exactly your stake back and make zero profit — this represents a mathematical certainty (or as close to one as can exist in betting).

Prices below 1.30 represent heavy favourites with implied probabilities above 77%. Prices above 10.00 represent genuine outsiders where variance is enormous — even if a selection is good value, it will lose most of the time.
Prices between 1.00 and 2.00 represent outcomes the market considers more likely than not. The critical implication: at any price below 2.00, your profit on a winning bet is less than your stake. A £100 bet at 1.60 returns £160 total — £60 profit, £100 stake. If this selection loses, you lose £100 to gain £60. You need it to win more than 62.5% of the time just to break even at these odds.
Many recreational bettors underestimate how often "favourites" need to win to be profitable. The break-even win rate is always exactly the implied probability — and the bookmaker's margin means even hitting that rate produces a loss over time.
