Not all shots are equal. A tap-in from two metres with an open goal is a near-certain goal. A speculative long-range effort from 30 metres is not. Expected Goals (xG) is the metric that assigns each shot a probability between 0 and 1 based on its characteristics: distance from goal, angle, shot type (header, foot), whether it was from open play or a set piece, and whether the shooter was under pressure.
An xG value of 0.35 means a shot from that situation would be converted 35% of the time on average. A player who scores 15 goals from chances with a combined xG of 10 is finishing above expectation. A player with 15 goals from 20 xG is underperforming their chance quality — and may be due to regress.

Shot conversion rates fluctuate significantly over short time frames due to variance. A striker who converts 25% of shots over 10 games may regress to 12% over the next 20, not because his quality has dropped but because the initial rate contained a significant luck component. Treat short-term finishing percentages with caution; xG provides the better signal.
